Inside the Piramal Pharma Sustainability Report: Our Progress Toward Responsible Growth
September 22, 2026
Introduction
Sustainability is no longer a side commitment for pharmaceutical companies — it is fast becoming the framework through which business decisions, operations, and long-term strategy are shaped. The newly released Piramal Pharma Sustainability Report for FY2025-26 offers a detailed look at how one of India's leading integrated pharmaceutical companies is translating this belief into measurable action. Themed "Advancing Innovation, Leveraging Sustainability," the report is Piramal Pharma's fifth annual sustainability disclosure, and it reflects a year defined by stronger systems, sharper priorities, and a more embedded approach to responsible growth across its global operations.
For a company operating manufacturing and development facilities across India, the United Kingdom, and North America, sustainability isn't an isolated function, it's woven into governance, quality, operations, and community engagement alike.

What Does the Piramal Pharma Sustainability Report Highlight?

The Piramal Pharma Sustainability Report is structured around four strategic pillars: Business Resilience, Quality and Excellence, Responsible Operations, and Stakeholder Centricity. Together, these pillars support 12 defined sustainability focus areas and address 17 material topics identified through structured stakeholder engagement, translated into more than 50 specific, time-bound targets.
The report has been prepared in line with the Global Reporting Initiative Universal Standards 2021 and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with key disclosures independently assured by DNV Business Assurance India. Among the year's standout figures: a 22.6% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared to the FY2022 baseline, 41% of total energy consumption sourced from renewables, zero fatalities over the last five years, and ₹8.98 crore invested in CSR programmes that reached approximately 1.8 million people. These outcomes reflect a business that is treating sustainability not as a compliance exercise, but as a driver of long-term value.
Global Pharmaceutical Sustainability Strategy and Sustainable Development

Piramal Pharma's sustainability vision is explicit: to become a globally leading integrated pharmaceutical company operating on the principles of sustainability, inclusivity, and ethics. This vision underpins its global pharmaceutical sustainability strategy, which is overseen by a Board-level Sustainability and Risk Management Committee chaired by the Company's Chairperson.
This governance structure ensures that sustainable development isn't confined to a single department , it is embedded across corporate governance, business ethics, enterprise risk management, and responsible supply chain practices. During the year, the company strengthened its decarbonisation roadmap, which has been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative, while also expanding its Laboratory Information Management System and progressing its SAP S/4HANA implementation to improve enterprise integration and enable more data-driven decision-making. Notably, climate-related risks and opportunities were actively monitored throughout the year, with no material impact reported on operations, revenues, or expenditures , a sign of the resilience built into the company's approach to sustainable development.
Water stewardship also featured prominently: the company reported saving over 2.63 lakh kilolitres of freshwater during the year, alongside continued efforts to improve recycling rates for non-hazardous waste, with 65% of total waste managed being sent for recycling.

Corporate Social Responsibility: Our Approach to Creating Social Impact

Piramal Pharma's approach to corporate social responsibility is guided by its founding philosophy of "Doing Well and Doing Good." The company's CSR agenda is overseen by a dedicated Board Committee responsible for setting policy, monitoring programme impact, and ensuring compliance in fund utilisation.
This year, CSR spending reached ₹8.98 crore, supporting health and education programmes across 112 aspirational districts and positively impacting close to 1.8 million people through the work of the Piramal Foundation. This reflects a belief that runs through the report: that business success should be measured not only in financial terms, but in the tangible difference it makes to the communities in which the company operates.
Governance discipline reinforces this commitment. All Board members participated in sessions focused on sustainability, compliance, and risk management, and the company reported zero corruption incidents alongside 100% workforce training on its Code of Conduct underscoring that social responsibility and ethical governance go hand in hand.
Pharmaceutical Corporate Social Responsibility and Community Initiatives

Pharmaceutical corporate social responsibility carries a distinct weight, given the industry's direct connection to patient health and community wellbeing. Piramal Pharma's community initiatives extend beyond financial contributions into structured, long-term engagement from education and skill development programmes to health-focused interventions in underserved regions.
The company also extended its responsibility lens to its value chain. Through its Sustainable Procurement Policy and active participation in the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative, Piramal Pharma assessed 38% of its critical suppliers against ESG criteria this year, while ensuring all suppliers are governed by its Supplier Code of Conduct. Locally, 49% of total procurement spend went to India-based suppliers and 25% to MSME suppliers, reinforcing regional economic development alongside environmental and social goals.

Key Sustainability and ESG Highlights of the Year

Several metrics stand out as markers of progress across the company's four sustainability pillars:
- Environmental performance: 22.6% lower GHG emissions versus the FY2022 baseline, 41% renewable energy share, and over 6,520 saplings planted, helping maintain more than 30% green cover across Indian operations.
- Governance strength: 50% of the Board comprising Independent Directors, 30% women's representation on the Board, and zero cases of data breaches reported during the year.
- Quality and operational trust: 38 successful regulatory inspections, 209 successful customer audits, and zero Official Action Indications across all USFDA inspections.
- Workforce and safety: Zero fatalities over the last five years, 100% completion of ESG training by employees, and 20.1% representation of women in the global workforce.
- External recognition: An EcoVadis score placing the company in the Bronze Medal category (78th percentile) and an S&P Global ESG score of 63, alongside multiple industry awards for safety, quality, and workplace culture.
Collectively, these figures illustrate a company making steady, verifiable progress rather than relying on broad commitments alone.
What Is the Future of Our Sustainability Journey?
Looking ahead, Piramal Pharma has signalled continued investment in capacity, technology, and partnerships that support responsible growth. The company is strengthening its advanced therapeutics platform through a US$90 million investment across its Lexington and Riverview facilities, while expanding formulation, sterile injectable, and bioconjugation capabilities to support next-generation drug development.
On the sustainability front, priorities for the coming years include deepening supplier ESG assessments, expanding renewable energy adoption, strengthening data protection through zero-trust architecture, and continuing to build toward the company's decarbonisation targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. The company has also indicated plans to roll out a unified digital quality management system and an integrated quality cockpit to strengthen real-time and predictive oversight signalling that technology will play an increasingly central role in how sustainability commitments are tracked and delivered.
The Piramal Pharma Sustainability Report paints a picture of an organization that views responsible growth as inseparable from business performance. From governance and supply chain integrity to community development and environmental stewardship, the report demonstrates how a global pharmaceutical sustainability strategy can be translated into structured, measurable outcomes. As Piramal Pharma continues to scale its operations across geographies, its sustainability journey offers a clear signal: that in modern pharma, doing well and doing good are not competing priorities, but complementary paths to long-term, trusted growth.
